Alois Eliáš, the Prime Minister

The Alois Eliáš government , led by Prime Minister Alois Eliáš , was in office from April 27, 1939 to January 19, 1942 in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia . It followed the Rudolf Beran II government and was replaced by the Jaroslav Krejčí government .

Government formation, program

After the resignation of the Rudolf Beran II government , Alois Eliáš took over the post of Prime Minister, with real power in the hands of Reich Protector Konstantin von Neurath . His government tried to pursue a policy of delay with regard to the instructions from the Reich capital Berlin , especially with regard to Germanization . Eliáš decided to take the step with the consent of the Czech resistance , in particular the Obrana národa group , in order to prevent the post from going to a member of the Czech fascists or other collaborators . Eliáš, who was himself a member of the Obrana národa group, with their help maintained secret contacts with the Czechoslovak government in exile in London , which is why he was arrested by the Gestapo on September 27, 1941 , formally released as Prime Minister and later executed. At the same time, the new Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich issued a state of emergency.

Government composition

Compared to previous governments, the ministries for foreign policy and defense have been dissolved. The first members of the Eliáš government were:

  • Alois Eliáš , Prime Minister (April 27, 1939 - January 19, 1942) and Minister of the Interior (April 27, 1939 - July 1, 1939, acting)

  • Josef Kalfus , Minister of Finance (April 27, 1939 - January 19, 1942)
  • Jan Kapras , Minister of Education (April 27, 1939 - January 19, 1942)
  • Jaroslav Krejčí , Minister of Justice and Deputy Prime Minister (April 27, 1939 - January 19, 1942), Minister of Agriculture (January 26, 1940 - February 3, 1940, acting)

  • Jaroslav Kratochvíl , Minister of Industry, Trade and Commerce (3.2.1940 - 19.1.1942)
  • Jiří Havelka , Minister of Transport (April 27, 1939 - April 25, 1941)
  • Jindřich Kamenický , Minister of Transport (April 25, 1941 - January 19, 1942)
  • Dominik Čipera , Minister for Public Works (April 27, 1939 - January 19, 1942)

  • Vladislav Klumpar , Minister for Social Affairs and Health (April 27, 1939 - January 19, 1942)

In January 1940 Ladislav Karel Feierabend fled abroad, where he soon joined the Czechoslovak government in exile in London. At the same time, Jiří Havelka was increasingly criticized by the protectorate authorities because of his contacts with the resistance, until the Reich Protector ordered him to be dismissed from the government in April 1941.

Party affiliation

In the protectorate, all political parties were banned and replaced by the Národní souručenství (German: National Community), to which all ministers were compulsorily affiliated.
