Karl Leopold von Bährnfeld

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Leopold Reichsgraf von Bährnfeld , born as Carl Leopold Nüßler from September 19, 1719 to June 12, 1721 Carl Leopold Graf von Ballenstedt , (born July 1, 1717 in Plötzkau ; † October 3, 1769 in Kassel ) was a Hessian regiment owner and lieutenant general .

Family and disputes over the title

Karl Leopold was born in 1717 as the son of the morganatic marriage of the widowed Prince Karl Friedrich (Anhalt-Bernburg) with his maid Wilhelmine Charlotte Nüßler in Plötzkau .

His older brother Friedrich von Bährnfeld (1712-1758), who was born out of wedlock but was legitimized by marriage, was also given the prospect of provincial succession in the event of a lack of princes in reports from the universities in Halle and Helmstedt about the unequal marriage, which some prostests promised of the Ascan dynasty. On December 19, 1719, after diplomatic complications, the emperor raised her mother Wilhelmine and her children, who had been conceived with Karl Friedrich, to countess or count of Ballenstedt, but in 1722 the Reichshofrat forbade her and her two sons to bear the title of count or even the title of prince. However, on June 12, 1723, the sons were raised to the rank of Counts of Bährnfeld .

Together with their half-brother Prince Viktor II. Friedrich, the brothers achieved in 1742 that Emperor Karl VII from the House of Wittelsbach elevated them to Prince of Bernburg and in 1743 the title became Prince of Anhalt-Bernburg. Prince Viktor I. Amadeus Adolf von Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg-Hoym protested against this decision . He was successful after the election of Emperor Franz I in 1745. In 1748 he confirmed the decision of the Reichshofrat to delete the title awarded in 1742/43 as a fraudulent predicate . The Counts of Bährnfeld were forbidden to call themselves Princes of Bernburg or Princes of Anhalt-Bernburg. However, they were allowed to call themselves Prinzen von Behrenfeld.

Karl Leopold and his brother had received an allowance of 5000 thalers annually from their father, payable by their older half-brother Viktor II. Friedrich (Anhalt-Bernburg) . Karl Leopold, like his older brother, Friedrich von Bährnfeld, died unmarried.

Military career

Prince Karl Leopold began in the Hessian service as captain in Infantry Regiment No. 10 , in 1745 he advanced to Colonel and Chief of Regiment No. 11 (Rgt. Prince Anhalt) that he had newly established and became Major General in 1751. In 1757 he became the commander of the fourth infantry brigade, which consisted of three regiments. In 1758 he was promoted to lieutenant general. He was involved in numerous battles of the Seven Years' War , such as the Battle of Minden , as leader of the right wing of the Allies, and the Battle of Wilhelmsthal . As the successor to Lieutenant General Heinrich Wilhelm von Wutginau (1698–1776), Karl Leopold became the commanding general of the Hessian contingent in the Allied Army in 1762. At the end of 1762 he was one of the Allied military leaders when the Anglo-French armistice was signed. He was a knight of the St Huberti Order and received the order Pour la vertu militaire in 1768 .
