List of the Hesse-Kassel regiments of the early modern period

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The present list of the regiments of Hesse-Kassel from the early modern period ends with the dissolution of the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel by Napoleon and its incorporation into the Kingdom of Westphalia in 1807 . Previously, on November 1, 1806 , Elector Wilhelm I had declared the regiments of the Hessian Army "on leave". This is how the later tradition was based, even after the country was annexed by Prussia in 1866.

Since the 16th century, a large number of regiments that existed only temporarily were set up, mostly on the occasion of campaigns. They are not yet part of this overview. The regiments of Hessen-Kassel received special attention when they were leased to King George III. of Great Britain for use in the American War of Independence . Over 12,000 men fought in the New World. Above all, however, the Hesse-Kassel regiments fought alongside the British troops in West Germany in the Seven Years' War .

Explanation of the system

A master list and numbering of the infantry regiments of the Hesse-Kassel army was not introduced. The designation was based on the name of the regiment owner . The list includes the regiments that existed in the long term in the order of their formation and is named after Bleckwenn . In addition, the year of foundation has been added to the list. This is intended to facilitate comparability. This numbering consistently follows the Ticino line-ups. If several regiments were founded in one year, Ticino added a second number (e.g. "1683/5" = fifth Hesse-Kassel regiment, which was set up in 1683). This is followed by the names of the regiment chiefs or the name of the commander.

Meaning of the symbols used: "*" = foundation, "†" = dissolution, ">" = whereabouts, "<" = origin, "=" = double function as a standing regiment of an imperial estate.
