Josef Butz was born in 1891 as the son of the teacher Josef Butz and his wife Agnes in Langscheid, today a district of Oberwesel. After graduating from school in 1912, Butz first studied mathematics and natural sciences in Bonn , and after the end of the First World War he turned entirely to studying music and musicology. In 1921 and 1922 Butz was a teacher of music history at the Ziskoven Conservatory in Bonn, succeeding Schiedermair. Butz was particularly successful as a composer of choral works : he was represented at many of the Nuremberg Singing Weeks and received a radio award for his German peasant dances .

In 1925 he founded the magazine Der Männerchor , which set itself the task of researching the essence and history of the male choir, which he published for two years. In 1924 he founded his own music publishing house, in which he wanted to make musically appealing pieces available to medium-sized and smaller choirs in particular. The music publisher Dr. J. Butz celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2014.
