Josef Carl (also: Karl) Klinkosch was the son of Carl Klinkosch (1797–1860) and Katharina geb. Kempenich (1801-1830). The mother died of puerperal fever and, like her husband Carl, was buried in the St. Marxer Friedhof (by the wall). Josef Carl's older brother Heinrich (1820–1889) was a banker and died by suicide. He was having financial problems. Josef Carl's younger brother Julius (1825–1897) died of hardened lungs and is buried at Hietzinger Friedhof (group 13, no. 145).

Josef Carl learned the silversmith's trade from his father, who founded the Mayerhofer & Klinkosch manufacture together with Stefan Mayerhofer in 1830/31 . In 1851 Josef Carl took over the manufacture.

In 1848 he married Elise. He was captain of the civil guard during the riots of 1848.

Klinkosch refined the style of the goods produced in the manufactory and also began making Chinese silver goods . Numerous artists, also from abroad, were entrusted with the preparation of the designs. During the manufacturing process, Klinkosch partially resumed the so-called “outdated” manual production, which became very successful across Europe. Numerous silver and gold medals at exhibitions for the high quality silver production were the result.

The company's customers included not only the upper bourgeoisie and aristocrats, but also the imperial court from 1855, which awarded him the title of “ kuk court and chamber supplier ” due to his merits and the high quality of the products .

In 1861/1862 Klinkosch was a member of the Vienna City Council.

In 1869 Klinkosch became sole owner and the company was renamed JC Klinkosch . The company took part in the world exhibitions in Vienna in 1873 and in Paris in 1878.

1879 Josef Carl Klinkosch became a knight knighted. From 1884 he retired from the business, and the company was passed on to his two sons Arthur (1853-1899) and Isidor (1852-1914). In his private life he was able to build up an extensive private art collection with his fortune, which was auctioned off in 1889 after his death. Josef Carl Klinkosch died in the house at Afrikanergasse 3 in the 2nd Viennese district Leopoldstadt . In 1918 the company was acquired by Arthur Krupp and continued under the name "JC Klinkosch AG". In 1972 the company was deleted from the commercial register.

In his second marriage, Prince Aloys von und zu Liechtenstein married his daughter Johanna Elisabeth Maria von Klinkosch (* 1848; January 31, 1925) on May 30, 1890. Johanna's first marriage to Ottomar Haupt, a banker, was annulled with a papal dispensation. The other daughter, Paula (1851-1901) married Count Gyula von Széchény (1829-1921). Their son Gyula (Julius jun.) Széchény (1878–1956) married Gisela, b. Countess Haas-Teichen (1890–1945), the daughter of the carpet dealer Philipp Haas-Teichen (1859–1926) - "Haas-Haus".

Josef Carl was buried in the family crypt at Hietzinger Friedhof, Group 13, No. 145, as well as his wife Elise, his brother Julius, his sons Isidor and Arthur and the child of Johanna and Alois Liechtenstein (stillborn 1891).
