Josef Dominik Abegg

Josef Dominik Abegg (born June 3, 1759 in Schwyz ; † March 29, 1826 in Schwyz ) was a Swiss teacher, church musician, violinist, organist, bookseller and bookbinder.

Life

Josef Dominik Abegg's father was Egidius Abegg. In 1781 Josef Dominik Abegg married Maria Elisabeth Reding and in 1794 Maria Josefa Ganginer. The Catholic Abegg first attended Latin schools in Schwyz and Muri AG , and then studied rhetoric and philosophy in St. Gallen, and finally medicine in Pavia and Turin . He was also into music and was considered a master of violin playing at the age of 19 . In 1780 he was elected master of the state school in Schwyz. This choice was confirmed for life in 1785. He reorganized the school system in Schwyz and founded a standard school in 1797 on the instructions of the St. Urban monastery. From 1799 he also held the office of organist and devoted himself to church music, the cultivation of choral singing and composed operettas. He also ran a bookstore and worked as a bookbinder.
