Josef Gabriel the Elder (* 1853 in Mercydorf , Austrian Empire ; † 1927 there ) was an Austro-Hungarian dialect poet from the Banat .

Life

Josef Gabriel came from the Banat Swabian ethnic group and attended elementary school in Mercydorf. From an early age he was involved in his parents' farm and kept this activity as an adult. He studied the German language independently and published his first poems at the age of 21. Gabriel was married three times and had nine children. He was respected by the German-speaking peasant population of Mercydorf, but was rated as a " Pangermanist " by the educated Magyar village elite .

He bears the suffix “the elder” to distinguish him from his nephew, the German poet Josef Gabriel the Younger .

In 1934, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the founding of Mercydorf, a plaque was placed on the house where he was born.
