Josef Hofmann (writer)

Josef Theobald Hofmann (born March 19, 1858 in Karlsbad , Bohemia ; † June 21, 1943 in Karlsbad, Sudetengau ) was a German-Bohemian homeland researcher and writer .

Life

Josef Hofmann was a son of the city civil servant Theobald Josef Hofmann and Aloisia Hofmann, geb. Thoma. His parents' house in Karlovy Vary was called "White Deer".

From 1870 he attended the grammar school in Elbogen and then the teacher training college in Komotau . He then became a substitute teacher at the Karlsbader Volks- und Bürgerschule in August 1879, in 1887 a specialist teacher, in 1916 director and in 1919 he retired.

In 1890 Hofmann founded a three-class commercial training school, which 20 years later had expanded to 26 classes. He was a city councilor in Karlovy Vary and also founded the Karlovy Vary Trade Association, of which he was a member for 38 years. From 1901 to 1904 he was a member of the Bohemian state parliament.

During his adult life, Hofmann tried to document, describe and preserve the Egerland folk culture, its customs, costumes, crafts, etc., which were slowly being forgotten at the end of the 19th century. He traveled through the Egerland, drew, photographed, listened to stories and legends. He documented all of this in his numerous books.
