Josef Kis

Josef Kis (also Kiss or Kisz , born January 10, 1833 in Eisenstadt , † November 5, 1900 in Vienna ) was an Austrian portrait , history and genre painter .

Life

Kis studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts , his teachers were Johann Nepomuk Geiger and Karl von Blaas .

His most important client was Archduke Maximilian , who later became Emperor of Mexico. After his execution in 1867, Kis painted portraits for the Hungarian nobility and also altarpieces there . He portrayed the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I several times, including during the negotiations on the Austro-Hungarian settlement . This oil painting now hangs in a prominent place in room V (Franz Joseph-Saal) of the Vienna Museum of Military History .

From 1876 he was a member of the Wiener Künstlerhaus , further biographical data are unknown to date.
