Josef Kreiner (Japanologist)

Josef Kreiner (born March 15, 1940 in Vienna ) is an Austrian Japanologist and was Professor of Japanese Studies at the University of Bonn from 1977 until his retirement in 2008 and director of the Japanese Studies Department.

Act

Kreiner is a pioneer of ethnologically oriented Japanese research and a specialist in Okinawa and the Ainu . He is also co-founder of the European Association of Japan Studies EAJS (presidency 1973–1980), further first director of the German Institute for Japanese Studies (DIJ) and founder of the Philipp-Franz-von-Siebold-Stiftung , BMBF (director 1988–1996) . Kreiner is a student of Alexander Slawik . From 1971 until his appointment to Bonn in 1977, Kreiner was a full professor for Japanese Studies and head of the institute of the same name at the University of Vienna . After his retirement, he worked at the Hōsei University as a professor for special tasks and, among other things, supervises the newly founded International Association for Ryukyuan / Okinawan Studies ( IAROS ).
