Josef Münch

Josef Münch (born March 19, 1894 in Rehling (Upper Bavaria), † March 12, 1977 in Bad Salzuflen ) was a German dentist and doctor and co-founder of children's dentistry .

Life

After attending primary school and the St. Stephan humanistic high school in Augsburg, Josef Münch studied dentistry and general medicine at the University of Munich . After an interruption during the First World War, in which he last participated as a lieutenant in the infantry, he resumed his studies in Munich and passed the state examination there in 1921. He was promoted to Dr. med. dent. PhD - in 1922 he followed his teacher Otto Walkhoff to the University of Würzburg , where he completed his habilitation in 1924, was appointed associate professor in 1927 and represented conservative dentistry and dental surgery. In addition to his extensive teaching activities, he studied medicine and, after passing the state examination, was also awarded a Dr. med. PhD. From 1939 to 1945 he took over the directorate of the Dental Institute as full professor for conservative dentistry. At the same time, as senior staff physician, he was responsible for the management of the oral surgery hospital in Würzburg. His doctoral students included Horst Pappée with a dissertation published in 1937 on school dental care in the emergency area: Rhön-Spessart in conjunction with the Doctor Hellmuth Plan . After early retirement after 1945, he mainly devoted himself to the editing of the specialist journal "Zahnärztliche Praxis". In 1956 he was appointed professor at the Humboldt University of Berlin and managed to succeed Wolfgang Rosenthal until his retirement in 1960, the hospital and Polyclinic for Dental and Oral Diseases, where he then his colleague Walter Künzel was replaced as successor .

His scientific work is reflected in more than 200 papers and a 14-volume series of publications on the practice of dentists. The focus of his research was on the histology of dentin and pulp nerve, the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the pulp and the apical and marginal periodontium, the treatment of children and fluoride research . Josef Münch was an internationally recognized scientist and university professor and a sought-after speaker at national and international conferences.

Awards

Commander's Cross of the Knightly Order of S. Salvatore, Merited Physician of the People , Merit Cross 1st Class of the Federal Order of Merit and honorary member of various national and international societies.
