Josef Maier (born November 24, 1900 in Heurenbach ; † November 13, 1985 in Mannheim ) was a German CDU politician .

Life and work

After attending secondary school in St. Gallen, Maier, who was a Roman Catholic , completed vocational training in the graphic arts industry in Switzerland . In 1916 he took part in the founding of the Christian trade union youth in Switzerland and was elected to its board. In July 1918 he was drafted for military service on the German side.

After the end of the First World War , Maier became involved in the Christian labor movement in Germany. After attending the social adult education center in Munich , he became a full-time worker secretary of the Christian trade unions, first in Munich and later in Mannheim. After the National Socialists smashed the trade unions, he worked as a representative in the printing and publishing industry until 1939. He was a soldier in World War II . He became a prisoner of war, from which he was released in 1946.

After returning to Mannheim, Maier worked for the DGB . He was a full-time board member of the DGB local cartel and a workers' secretary. From 1960 to 1968 he was an honorary judge at the Baden-Württemberg State Labor Court .

Political party

Maier joined the Christian Social Party in Switzerland in 1917 . In 1918 he participated in the founding of the Windthorstbund for the city of Ulm . He joined the Center Party and was from 1922 to 1924 chairman of the district association of the Bavarian Center in Munich. In 1946 he joined the CDU in Mannheim and participated in the founding of the CDU social committees in North Baden. From 1951 on he was deputy chairman of the Mannheim CDU.

MP

Maier was a member of the German Bundestag from November 20, 1953, when he replaced Oskar Farny , until 1965. Before that he was a member of the Mannheim City Council from 1951 to 1953.

Honors

Maier was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit in 1965.
