Josef Mertin (artist)

Josef Mertin (born October 20, 1919 in Sudetenland, † December 12, 1995 in Gudensberg - Dissen ) was a German painter , carpet artist , local researcher and politician . His signature was JM.

Life

Josef Mertin was born in the Sudetenland in 1919 . There he attended the Volks-, Bürger- and arts and crafts school . As a student, he devoted himself enthusiastically to drawing, oil painting and watercolor painting. After military service and subsequent imprisonment, his expelled family was reunited in Gudensberg-Dissen in 1948. In the 1960s he was looking for new forms of artistic expression using contemporary materials. Over the years he developed the technique of mosaic pictures from carpets to artistic perfection. After religious motifs and depictions of nature, he devoted himself to the artistic representation of folk songs , legends , sagas and fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm . Since 1962 he has exhibited in more than 70 solo exhibitions in Germany and Japan . In Japan in particular, his work on the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm was highly regarded. In 1973 Josef Mertin founded the local Heimatverein in Dissen . From 1972 to 1977 he was head of the Gudensberg district of Dissen. In 1978, Josef Mertin was awarded the "Letter of Honor of the State of Hesse" for his services to the citizenship and community and the expellees from the Sudetenland. In 1982, Josef Mertin published the collection of Hessian sagas “The Mountain of the Blue Flower”, which are on the Odenberg . In 1985 he wrote the "Village Chronicle of the Gudensberg District Dissen". In 2011, the Gudensberg legend hiking trail Josef-Mertin-Weg was opened in memory of Josef Mertins.
