Josef Platzer (also Joseph Platzer ; born September 20, 1751 in Prague , † April 4, 1806 in Vienna ) was an Austrian architect and decorative painter.

Life

Platzer studied in Prague with the painter Franz Wolf, and in Vienna with various artists architectural drawing and the painting of theater decorations. In 1789 he became a full member of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and in 1795 he was appointed imperial court chamber painter. He worked for Prince Moritz von Liechtenstein , Prince Ferdinand von Kinsky and Count Moritz von Fries .

Works

His works include pieces of ruins, night and prison scenes as well as theater decorations.

The painting The Assassination of Semiramis (1789), his decorations for Beethoven's ballet The Creatures of Prometheus (1801) and the original decorations in the theater of Litomyšl Castle deserve special mention . He left behind 222 stage designs and drawings.
