Josef Schmid (sociologist)

Josef Schmid (born August 12, 1937 in Linz , Austria ; † April 8, 2018 ) was an Austrian sociologist . He had the first German Institute for Population Studies at the University of Bamberg held.

Life

Schmid studied business and economics at the Universities of Munich and Innsbruck as well as sociology, philosophy and psychology at the University of Munich. In 1974 he received his doctorate with a dissertation in cultural sociology; In 1980 he completed his habilitation at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Munich with the text “Population and Social Development”, which is still considered a standard work today. From 1980 until his retirement in 2003 he was full professor for population science at the Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg. From 1981 to 2007 he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Federal Institute for Population Research and a member of the Enquête Commissions on Demographic Change.

The main focus of teaching and research was population analysis of the industrialized world and developing countries, the world population and its geopolitical relevance, as well as cultural evolution and system ecology. Schmid has published numerous writings, including some influential scientific works such as "Introduction to Population Sociology". “Population - Environment - Development. A Human Ecological Perspective ”and“ Population Science in Progress - The Spiritual Foundations of German Population Sociology ”.
