Josef Schulhof (* 1824 in Dolní Kalná , Bohemia ; † June 10, 1890 in Hietzing , Lower Austria ) was an Austrian designer and inventor.

Life

The son of a Talmud scholar went to Hungary at the age of 14 and got by through tutoring. Self-taught, he acquired technical and agricultural education. From 1842 he worked as a construction assistant for the Klein brothers' railway construction and later became site manager. Between 1849 and 1851 Schulhof is said to have worked as an entrepreneur in the construction of the Semmering Railway and built a bakery there for its workers. He was then to 1856 as site manager of the railway Orwicza - Bazias in Banat operates. After the work was completed, the schoolyard remained in the Banat and leased the Denta state domain . He was able to significantly improve yields by building dams and using technology. In November 1861, Emperor Franz Joseph I's schoolyard in Denta demonstrated a Fowler steam plow that he had redesigned . A little later, Schulhof entered the service of Prince Esterházy as inspector general of the estates and later became the general leaseholder of the Esterházy estates. In this function, Schulhof pushed ahead with a rigorous leasing process and published his experiences in a letter of recommendation on the leasing of state property.

Then Schulhof settled in Vienna and devoted himself to the construction of technical innovations. In 1868 he had a tubular well patented, which, among other things, the French troops used to supply water in the Sahara. Together with Salomon Bauer, he developed an air locomotive in 1873. Schulhof, who had been a member of the Vienna Rifle Club since the 1870s and had introduced pistol shooting there, later devoted himself to the construction of firearms. In 1885 he went to the Kagran shooting range in a public competition against the American art shooter Ira Paine (1841-1889), to which he, however, clearly had to admit defeat. On September 30, 1885, he entered the Prague Variety Theater again in a shooting competition with the target pistol against Paine.

His patented inventions include Schulhof's portable tubular fountain, the Norton patent (1868), the Schulhof repeating rifle system with a piston lock and a magazine housed in the piston (1882), the repeating rifle with straight-pull cylinder lock and drum magazine (1886) and a target pistol (1888).
