Josef Taucher (painter)

Josef Taucher (born August 4, 1948 in Weiz , Styria ) is an Austrian painter , sculptor and graphic artist .

Life

Josef Taucher learned the trade of machine fitter and electric welder in his hometown of Weiz. His apprenticeship also included technical drawing, which was to be of use to him throughout his later career. 1970 to 1974 he attended the HTBLA Ortweinschule Graz, department of painting and graphics . Since 1974 Josef Taucher has lived and worked as a freelance artist in Graz as well as in various places in Styria.

With the mineralogist and crystallographer Christine Elisabeth Hollerer he is linked by artistic collaborations and co-authorship in his mineralogical publication activities.

Josef Taucher is best known for his views of spectacular mountain formations. In his younger years he was a passionate extreme climber and has been investigating the relationship between nature and art since the 1970s, using a wide variety of art genres and methods, especially in his early days. In the 1980s, alongside Siegfried Anzinger , Hans Kupelwieser , Manfred Wakolbinger , Lois Weinberger and Erwin Wurm, he was one of the most important representatives of new sculpture in Austria. Less known than his painting is his autonomous graphic work.

Josef Taucher has also been working as a mineralogist since the 1980s . He discovered four new minerals such as Weinebeneit and Pretulite , and he played a key role in determining their structure . Furthermore, he published a large number of mineralogical specialist literature over several decades.
