Live and act

Wilfried Skreiner was born on October 8, 1927 in Graz into a middle-class family. After completing general school education and graduating from high school , he began studying law and art history at the University of Graz . He completed both studies with a doctorate , before working in both areas after graduation. In his dissertation , published in 1963, he wrote about the representations of transience in Western painting. From 1966 he worked as a professor at the University of Graz - he completed his habilitation in the 1970s with a thesis on Alfred Wickenburg - and in the same year became director of the Neue Galerie Graz at the Landesmuseum Joanneum . Furthermore, in 1966 he launched the International Painting Weeks and in 1967 initiated the numerous trigon exhibitions as part of steirischer herbst . The trigon Biennale was originally founded in 1963 by Hanns Koren and held until 1995.

Under his direction, around 600 exhibitions were realized in the Neue Galerie. From the mid-1970s and especially in the 1980s, Skreiner advocated the so-called New Painting in Austria and the so-called New Wilders . These included representatives such as Erwin Bohatsch , Hubert Schmalix , Alfred Klinkan and Alois Mosbacher . However, he not only campaigned for the younger generation, but also praised older artists such as Mario Decleva , whom he described as “one of the few really informal artists, not only in Styria”. In addition, Skreiner was a member of the cultural board of trustees and also served at times on the steirischer herbst directorate . For almost 30 years he helped shape the local art scene until his death.

In the course of his life, Skreiner published numerous art-specific works and artist biographies. Books about Franz Blum , Rudolf Szyszkowitz , Mario Ballocco , Alfred Wickenburg , Axl Leskoschek , Gianni Colombo , Karl Stark , Nadežda Prvulović , Peter Pongratz , Robert Keil , Fred Hartig , Marcello Morandini , Max Weiler and Alfred Kubin were created . Other books in which he was the main author were Austrian Painting (1973), Emotions (1971), Hans-Fronius-Archive (1968) and Religious Art Today (1968). In addition, he was involved as a co-author of ten different works.

Skreiner died on April 21, 1994 at the age of 66 in his hometown Graz. The Austrian contribution to the graphic biennial in Zagreb , which took place around three weeks later, was also dedicated in memory of Wilfried Skreiner . From May 30 to June 30, 1995, a special exhibition entitled In Memoriam Wilfried Skreiner was held in his honor at the Neue Galerie Graz . The book Wilfried Skreiner was also published in 1995 through the Neue Galerie , a homage to the gallery director who had died a year earlier.

On 20 October 2000 was first named after Skreiner and initially with 100,000 shillings and later with 7,500 euros doped Wilfried Skreiner prize in the Neue Galerie awarded; The first winner was the performance and photo artist Elke Krystufek, born in 1970 . The award, which the Society of Friends of the Neue Galerie commemorates and honors the merits of Univ.-Prof. GDR. Wilfried Skreiner, whose commitment to the promotion and development of young Austrian artists is donated, has been awarded every two years since then. Today (as of 2019) there is a portrait bust of Skreiner made from bronze by Erwin Huber in the Neue Galerie .

His niece is the renowned divorce lawyer Ursula Xell-Skreiner, who was born in Graz in 1967 and has lived in Vienna since 1988 .
