Axl Leskoschek (originally Albert von Leskoschek ; born September 3, 1889 in Graz , † February 12, 1976 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter , graphic artist and illustrator.

Live and act

The son of a field marshal lieutenant studied law (doctorate in 1917), was an air lieutenant in the First World War and returned home seriously wounded. After the war he studied at the Landes-Kunstschule in Graz with Alfred Schrötter and between 1921 and 1923 he continued his studies with Alfred Cossmann (1870–1951) at the graphic teaching and research institute in Vienna.

The left-wing Leskoschek worked as a culture editor for the social democratic daily " Arbeiterwille " until 1934 . He also emerged as a book illustrator from 1920. He created woodcuts for two volumes of the well-known Insel-Bücherei : fairy tales and legends from the Gesta Romanorum (IB 388, 1926) and humor and satires by Franz von Gaudy (IB 460/2, 1967). Leskoschek was one of the co-founders of the Werkbund “Freiland” (1919) and the Secession (1923) in Graz. In 1925 he received the Austrian State Prize for his graphic work .

As a participant in the February uprising , Leskoschek was imprisoned several times in 1934, 1935 and 1936. Together with his friend Herbert Eichholzer , Leskoschek , who had switched to the KPÖ in 1934, fled Austria on March 12, 1938. Through a church aid organization, the artist was able to travel to Brazil, where he lived from 1941 to 1948 and worked as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro .

The mural "Allegory of Friends" by Axl Leskoschek is located in the Villa Albrecher-Leskoschek, built by Herbert Eichholzer in Graz , Hilnteichstrasse 24. The mural dates from 1937 and is directed against the emerging National Socialism and its consequences. It bears witness to a surrealistic and at the same time allegorically-coded painting style in which Axl Leskoschek reached his painterly climax.

Axl Leskoschek returned to Austria in 1948, but suffered from the marginalization of the communists after the October strike in 1950 .

In 1971 there was a major exhibition in Graz, 1974 in Vienna. An exhibition planned for Leskoschek's 100th birthday in 1989 has been canceled.

Axl Leskoschek served as a model for the character of Albert Trebla (or Albert von ***) in Ulrich's Becher novel “The Marble Hunt”.
