Josef Thoma , (born September 1828 in Vienna ; † December 15, 1899 there ) was an Austrian landscape and genre painter .

Thoma was the son of the painter Josef Thoma senior. He studied at the Vienna Academy and, after completing his training, worked as a landscape painter in Vienna; frequent motifs of his paintings, watercolors and drawings, which were influenced by Romanticism , were alpine landscapes. He also used the pseudonym J. Gärtner . He was known for his cityscapes of Ischl and Salzburg as well as depictions of landscapes from the Zillertal , the Pustertal and the Steyrtal .

He is not to be confused with the Eifel landscape painter Josef Thoma (1930–1988) of the same name.
