Josef Vollberg

Josef Vollberg OCSO (born May 14, 1963 in Frankfurt am Main ) is the emeritus abbot of the former Trappist Abbey of Mariawald in the Eifel region.

Life

He was born as Eberhard Vollberg in Frankfurt am Main and grew up in Wetzlar . After graduating from high school and doing military service, he began studying business administration at the Giessen University of Applied Sciences . On December 1, 1986, he entered the Mariawald convent and in 1998 began studying theology and philosophy at the Theological College of the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz in Austria, which he completed with a master's thesis on monastic theology with Bernhard von Clairvaux .

On January 26, 1992 he made his solemn profession and on August 15, 2003 he received the appointment of lecturer and acolyte . On April 23, 2005, Father Immediate , Father  Antonio Lépore OCSO, abbot of the Trappist Abbey Oelenberg in Alsace, whose monks had repopulated the Mariawald Abbey in 1860, appointed Father Joseph as Superior ad nutum and thus stood the abbey as Upper with all rights.

Father Joseph was ordained a deacon on December 17, 2005 and a priest on June 29, 2006 by Heinrich Mussinghoff , Bishop of Aachen. He celebrated his monastery primiz on Sunday, July 2nd, 2006, in the abbey church.

On November 24, 2006, the conventual chapter of the Abbey of Mariawald Vollberg elected abbot for life. His abbot was given on January 26, 2007 in the abbey church of the monastery by Bishop Karl Borsch .

After the visitators Dom Bernardus Peeters (Tilburg) and Dom Erik Varden (Mount Saint Bernard) had discussed and examined many possibilities for the future of the abbey, Abbot Josef resigned from the office of Abbot of Mariawald on October 21, 2016. Bernardus Peeters von Tilburg headed the abbey as Immediatab ( Pater Immediat ). Josef Vollberg continued to serve as prior and superior in Mariawald. After the abbey was closed, in 2018 he went to the Cistercian Abbey Vyšší Brod (Hohenfurth) in the Czech Republic, where the monks had returned in 2011, as before in Mariawald, to the liturgy and observance in the custom of the Order of Monte Cistello in the version from 1963/64 . In 2017, three monks with solemn profession and one wafer lived in Hohenfurth.

The Mariawald Abbey was closed on September 15, 2018.
