Josef Schmitt , since 1896 Knight von Schmitt (born March 4, 1838 in Hofheim in Lower Franconia ; † April 16, 1907 in Bamberg ) was the President of the Bavarian Regional Court and an honorary citizen of the city of Bamberg.

Life

After studying law in Würzburg, where he became a member of the Corps Bavaria , and receiving his doctorate as Dr. jur. Schmitt worked as a public prosecutor and judge in Bamberg. He became a Bavarian Privy Councilor of Justice and Privy Councilor .

From 1870 he was the royal lawyer in Bamberg. Today's free profession of lawyer was then a government agency. From 1884 to 1905 he was president of the district court in Bamberg . In this capacity he was made an honorary citizen of Bamberg in 1889 and the "Dr.-von-Schmitt-Straße" there today bears his name. In 1896, Prince Regent Luitpold awarded him the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown . With the award, the elevation to the personal nobility was connected and he was allowed to call himself "Ritter von Schmitt" after the entry in the nobility register .

He was also a successful business lawyer. During the founding period , he was involved in numerous company foundings. Business connections existed with the Dresdner banking house Gebr. Arnhold . From 1898 until his death he was chairman of the supervisory board of the Schweinfurt ball producer "Fries & Höpflinger " and made a decisive contribution to the company's upswing.

A number of honorary functions were performed by him. He was chairman of the community plenipotentiary college and president of the district administrator in Bamberg.
