Josefina Vidal

Josefina de la Caridad Vidal Ferreiro (born February 18, 1961 ) is a Cuban diplomat . She is Director General for Relations with the United States at the Cuban State Department and negotiator for the Cuban government in talks to improve Cuban-US-American relations .

Live and act

Josefina Vidal studied international relations in Moscow from 1979 to 1984 and obtained her doctorate . She then worked as a researcher for relations between the USA and Cuba at the University of Havana . From 1991 to 1997 she worked as an analyst in the Cuban embassy in France . From 1999 to 2003 she was First Secretary in the Cuban Interest Group in the USA.

In 2003 she left the USA. Her husband and then consul José Anselmo López was accused of espionage by the government of George W. Bush and he was expelled from the country. She then held various positions in the Cuban Foreign Ministry. She later led the negotiations to improve relations between the United States and Cuba, which had been secret until December 2014, and which temporarily ended with the reopening of diplomatic relations by mid-2015 . In July 2017 she was appointed Ambassador to Canada .

In addition to her native Spanish , Josefina Vidal speaks English , French and Russian .
