Orenaia helveticalis is a butterfly from the family of Crambiden (Crambidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 20 to 22 millimeters. The head, thorax and abdomen are blackish and covered with long hair-like scales. The forewings are gray-black and indistinctly drawn. The root, central and fringing areas are black and speckled with long, pale blue-gray scales and separated by the rather broad, undulating whitish inner and outer transverse lines. The discal stain is indistinct and dirty. The fringed scales are brownish gray. They have a dark line at the base and a white border. The hind wings are whitish and variably mixed with gray-brown. Pale specimens have a more or less distinct dark border. The fringed scales also have a dark line at the base, but in contrast to the forewings, they have a wider white border. The undersides of the wings have a whitish sheen and are broadly bordered with dark. On the underside of the forewing there is a distinct dark but narrow discal spot. The fringed scales are gray-brown and have a distinct white border.

In the males, the valves are somewhat more elongated than in the other species of the genus. On the phallus there is a group of about 14 strong cornuti.

In females, the corpus bursae is broadly ovoid and has two shadowy signs in the basal half. The ductus bursae gradually tapers into a corrugated, more sclerotized antrum .

Similar species

Orenaia helveticalis differs from the other larger species of the genus Orenaia by the white-edged fringed scales and the whitish undersides with the broad dark border.

distribution

Orenaia helveticalis occurs in the Pyrenees . The species was last detected in Germany in 1952 (Alps, above the tree line). In Austria, the species was detected in the federal states of Vorarlberg, North Tyrol, East Tyrol, Carinthia and Styria. The species was also found in Switzerland and Italy.

biology

The pre-imaginal stages are unknown. The moths fly at high altitudes from July to August.

Systematics

The following synonyms are known from the literature :

  • Without genus: helveticalis Herrich-Schäffer , 1851
  • Hercyna helveticalis Herrich-Schäffer , 1855
  • Oreneia helveticalis . albescens Galvagni , 1926
  • Orenaia helveticalis . galvagnii Klima , 1939
  • Orenaia helueticalis gedralis Leraut , 1996
  • Orenaia helueticalis postalbescens Speidel , 1996

The following subspecies have been described:

  • Orenaia helveticalis gedralis Patrice Leraut , 1996. Gèdre , Hautes-Pyrénées (France). The subspecies is slightly smaller, the moths have a wingspan of 17 to 19 millimeters for the males and 20 millimeters for the females. The inner and outer transverse lines on the forewings are less wavy and further apart. The dark edge on the underside of the hind wing is more clearly and clearly demarcated. In the males, the abdomen is more elongated. However, these properties are only visible in fresh specimens. In the males, the valves are narrower and, in extreme cases, finger-shaped. The phallus is shorter and thicker. In females, the ductus bursae is longer and slimmer, the corpus bursae is more rounded.
  • Orenaia helveticalis murinalis Guillaume Leraut , 2011. French Alps, from Hautes-Alpes to Alpes-Maritimes . The subspecies is characterized by ash-gray fore wings.
  • Orenaia helveticalis postalbescens Speidel , 1996. Triglav , Slovenia . The subspecies is strikingly pale. The thorax and abdomen are scaled whitish and the forewing tops are more speckled with white. The hind wing upper and lower sides are identical to those of the nominate form .
  • Orenaia helveticalis ventosalis Chrétien , 1910. Mont Ventoux , France. The subspecies has lighter fore wings. The hind wings are partly white and have a gray margin line. The undersides of the wings are whitish and have a gray border. The discal patch is often missing. The genitals of both sexes are identical to those of the nominate form .
