Joseph's grave (also Josef grave , Hebrew קבר יוסף Kever Yosef ; Arabic قبر يوسف, DMG Qabr Yūsuf ) is a biblical memorial at the eastern entrance to the valley between the mountains Gerizim and Ebal , north of Jacob's well on the outskirts of Nablus in the West Bank near the biblical Shechem .

meaning

The traditions of Joseph's grave go back to the 4th century AD. It is one of the holiest places in Judaism , but is also venerated by Samaritans , Christians and Muslims . The Jewish progenitor Joseph and his sons Ephraim and Manasseh are said to be buried here . This contradicts the Islamic tradition, according to which the biblical Joseph is said to have been buried in Hebron .

history

In 1967 the place was conquered along with the West Bank by the Israeli army. Since December 12, 1995, Nablus has been part of the Palestinian Authority . In the interim agreement on the West Bank and Gaza Strip , it was agreed that Joseph's grave would remain an Israeli enclave . Even so, the place became the subject of violent protests by the Palestinians.

On October 8, 2000, the eve of Yom Kippur , Palestinians ravaged the tomb for the first time. Two years later, it was almost completely destroyed on the Day of Atonement, as well as in February and October 2003.

On April 24, 2011, a member of the Breslover Hasidim was killed by the Palestinian police while attempting to visit Joseph's tomb. According to concurring reports from the Palestinian authorities and the Israeli army, the group of religious Jews drove into the Palestinian autonomous region near Nablus without a permit. The person killed is the 24-year-old nephew of the Israeli education minister Limor Livnat , who said she was "shocked by the murderous attack" on the visitors, with her nephew "murdered in cold-blooded and heinous ways".

On the morning of October 16, 2015, a group of around 100 Palestinians set the tomb on fire, seriously damaging it. Even before IDF troops arrived, security forces from the Palestinian Authority dispersed the insurgents and put out the fire.

At the end of March 2019, Israeli soldiers shot dead two Palestinians when they threw explosives from their vehicle at the entrance to Joseph's tomb.
