history

After Joseph II von Schwarzenberg had acquired the rule of Stubenbach in 1799 , he had the Chinitz-Tettau flood canal built in order to be able to exploit the wood wealth of the Bohemian Forest by means of rafting inland. Josefstadt was one of the first logging settlements around 1800, followed by Pürstling, south of it, in 1804 . The Josefstadt settlement, consisting of 13 primitive wooden houses, was not permanently inhabited. The lumberjacks from the administrative village of Langendorf and other localities moved with their families and the small number of livestock to Josefstadt after the snow melted and left the settlement before the onset of winter. The settlement was abandoned in the late 1880s.

Today only the trampus cross and remains of the foundation walls of Josefstadt can be found in the forest.
