Josep Tarradellas
Josep Tarradellas i Joan (born January 19, 1899 in Cervelló , † June 10, 1988 in Barcelona ) was a Catalan politician and President of the Generalitat de Catalunya in exile from 1954 until the restoration of political autonomy of Catalonia in 1980 as a result of the democratization of Spain after the Death of Franco , the Transición .
Tarradellas began his political career in Catalonia at a young age and in 1916 became a close collaborator of Francesc Macià . Together with him and Lluís Companys, he founded the party Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya - the Republican Left of Catalonia - ERC for short, of which he became General Secretary in 1931. In the same year he was elected member of the Spanish Parliament, the Cortes , and conseller (equivalent to a minister) in the Catalan regional government.
During the Spanish Civil War he held various offices in the Generalitat, whose Conseller Primer (according to the Prime Minister) he became in 1936. With the collapse of the republic he had to go into French exile in 1939, where he was appointed long-term president of the Catalan government in exile in 1954.
After Franco's death in 1975, he negotiated the official restoration of the Generalitat with the President of the Spanish Government, Adolfo Suárez . On his subsequent return to Barcelona on October 23, 1977, he was enthusiastically welcomed by a large crowd and spoke from the balcony of the Catalan seat of government, the Palau de la Generalitat , the now historic saying: "Ciutadans de Catalunya, ja sóc aquí!" German: "Citizens of Catalonia, I'm back!"). Subsequently, Tarradellas formed a unity government, with which he drew up the Statute of Autoniomy of Catalonia in 1979 . In 1980 he resigned to make way for the new freely elected government under Jordi Pujol .
