from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Fürstlich Castell'sche Domainamt is a winery in Lower Franconia . It belongs to the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries and to the grouping "The Goods" of nine German wineries with the same philosophy.

Acreage

The winery consists of a cultivation area of 70 hectares. The vineyards are located around the town of Castell in the favorable continental-Atlantic climate in niches of the Steigerwald on Gipskeuper soils.

The vineyards that were mentioned in documents as early as 1266 are Hohnart (4.5 ha), Schlossberg (5 ha), Reitsteig (1.3 ha) and Trautberg (4 ha). Other individual layers are Kirchberg (1.8 ha), Bausch (16 ha) and Kugelspiel (16 ha).

Wines

The wines are made dry and bottled in both Bordeaux and Bocksbeutel bottles. The varieties include Silvaner with a third of the vineyard area, Müller-Thurgau (22%), Bacchus (8%), Riesling (8%), Rieslaner , Kerner , Scheurebe and Traminer as well as Pinot Noir and Domina . In 1659 the Silvanerrebe was brought to Castell from Austria by Wolfgang Dietrich zu Castell and has been cultivated there ever since.

The wines bear the coat of arms of the family zu Castell-Castell, a line of the Castell noble family . The average annual production is 450,000 bottles, which corresponds to a yield of around 58 hectoliters per hectare. For its wines, the winery received three out of five possible grapes in the Gault-Millau wine guide in 2012, and the Eichelmann wine guide awarded three out of five possible stars in 2012 and classified the Fürstlich Castell'sche Domainamt as a “very good winery”. "The Castell domain office is approved as a sworn wine supplier."

Quality levels

The wines are bottled in Bordeaux or Bocksbeutel bottles. The estate wines do not indicate a location, but the designation of origin Schloss Castell. The single vineyard wines come from the Bausch, Kugelspiel, Hohnart, Kirchberg and Trautberg vineyards . The top and big plants come mainly from the Reitsteig and Schlossberg locations.

history

The winemaking tradition in the area goes back over eight centuries. Viticulture was first mentioned in a document as early as 1224. The Hohnart, Schlossberg, Reitsteig and Trautberg vineyards can be traced back to the year 1266. In 1497 they were also shown cartographically on the Casteller Wildbannkarte. The grape harvest and cellar registers stored in the archive date back to the 16th century. The Silvaner grape was probably planted on German soil for the first time at the winery - documents prove the purchase of the corresponding vines in 1659.
