Joseph-Marie Timon-David
Joseph-Marie Timon-David (born January 29, 1823 in Marseille , France , † April 10, 1891 ibid) was a French Catholic priest and founder of the Congrégation du Sacré-Cœur .
Life
Joseph-Marie Timon-David attended school in the Jesuit College of St. Michael in Friborg (Switzerland) , whose educational methods made a great impression on him. In 1842 he made the decision to become a priest. His bishop, Saint Charles Joseph Eugène de Mazenod , Archbishop of Marseilles , sent him to the Saint-Sulpice seminary in Paris; there he became a determined opponent of Gallicanism . In Saint-Sulpice he met Dom Guéranger . In 1846 he was ordained a priest; its primacyhe celebrated on June 29, 1846. In Paris Timon-David got to know the needs of the working class and developed the idea of a corresponding apostolate. With the support of Archbishop Eugène de Mazenod, he founded the Congrégation du Sacré-Cœur on November 20, 1852 , which only took shape and began to grow in 1859. In 1864 the first school for working class children was founded. In 1876 the congregation was established as a congregation of priests under papal law by Pope Pius IX. accepted.
