Joseph-Martin Cabirol

Joseph-Martin Cabirol (born March 29, 1799 in Narbonne , † December 15, 1874 in Paris ) was a French rubber manufacturer and inventor of a helmet diving device and a diving lamp .
Life
Joseph-Martin Cabirol was born in modest circumstances in Narbonne, learned hat making and came to Paris as a young man. He worked as a rubber manufacturer and in 1846 received a patent for the processing of gutta-percha . Among the many uses of this material were protective suits made of rubberized canvas for environments without breathable air. In 1855 he received a patent for a hose-supplied helmet diving device , which he called "Scaphandre" . The model is similar to previous models from August Siebe . The helmet has a hand-operated valve with which the helmet diver removes the exhaled air from the helmet. A safety device in the valve prevents water from entering the helmet. The fourth viewing opening on the front of the helmet at the top, which allows the diver a limited view upwards, corresponds to a Siebes model from 1840. Older models only had three round viewing openings (front, left and right). At the world exhibition in Paris in 1855 , his diving device was awarded. The original rubber canvas diving suit and helmet are in the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in Paris. From 1857 Cabirol supplied the Imperial French Navy with diving suits. After Cabirol's death, his nephew Charles Ferrus continued the company.
The Cabirol-Ferrus mausoleum is located in the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris and is registered as a historic monument ( Monument historique ). It is kept in the Base Mérimée , a database of the French Ministry of Culture ( Ministère de la Culture ), under the key PA00086780. The frieze is decorated with a goat coat of arms ( cabirol is the Occitan word for goat), flanked on the right and left by helmet divers.
