Joseph Abraham Stargardt (born June 17, 1822 in Märkisch-Friedland , † April 30, 1885 ) was a German publishing house, bookseller and antiquarian .

Life

From 1838 to 1844 Joseph Stargardt worked in Berlin as an apprentice and assistant at A. Asher & Comp. and then from April 1 to the end of September 1844 in the bookstore of Carl Friedrich Amelang (1785–1856). From October 1844 to the end of 1845 he continued his education with A. Franck in Paris and then worked for a year at the antiquarian JF Lippert in Halle.

In August 1847 he had registered in Berlin to acquire civil rights and was summoned to take the oath on December 8th. However, he refused to take the oath of Jews in the prescribed form. He did not receive his civil rights certificate until May 1852.

In September 1847, together with his partner Paul Julius Reuter , he took over from Ernst Krigar the book and music store founded by Johann Carl Klage (1785–1850) in 1830 (with the exception of the entire music publishing house, which Krigar had previously sold to J. Guttentag, Trautweinsche Buchhandlung, had sold).

During the revolution of 1848/49 they published a number of political writings that can be broadly described as democratic. While Stargardt was emphatically cautious at the time, Reuter was the driving force behind expressions of democratic consciousness, soon had to answer for the spread of democratic literature and flee abroad. Stargardt could never forgive him for that.

After Stargardt had become the sole owner in 1849, the company took on its current name. Under Stargardt's leadership, it became the most important second-hand bookshop of the 19th century. After 30 years of activity, an important antiquarian warehouse had developed, of which around 150 warehouse and auction catalogs were published.

In 1885 his widow sold the business to Eugen Mecklenburg the Elder. J. (1859-1925); JA Stargardt, the world leader in the field of autographs, is still owned by the Mecklenburg family today .
