Joseph Hartmann lived in Munich since 1833 and probably received his training as a portrait painter there. Between 1838 and 1843 he exhibited in Darmstadt and Munich. In 1847 he was appointed court painter to Count Albrecht zu Erbach-Fürstenau and lived in Darmstadt from 1850. In addition to portraits of the grand ducal family there, he painted portraits of bourgeois society.
