Joseph Almanzi

Joseph Almanzi (born March 25, 1801 in Padua , † March 7, 1860 in Trieste ) was an Italian author.

Life

Joseph Almanzi was born in Padua on March 25, 1801, the son of the merchant Baruch Ḥayyim Almanzi. At first he was taught by private tutors . Following Italian custom, he wrote Hebrew poems on special occasions at a young age. At the age of 20 he studied Jewish literature and collected Hebrew books. He copied rare works that he could not buy.

Almanzi spoke German, French, Hebrew, Italian, Latin and Syriac. His father had also bought him the Chaim Joseph David Azulais library , which Almanzi expanded. He later moved to Trieste, where he participated in public. He died there unmarried on March 7, 1860.

Almanzi had made a special contribution as a poet. He also translated well-known Italian poems into Hebrew and studied history. Some of his letters and poems have been published in the Yad Yosef collection (The Hand of Joseph; Cracow and Trieste 1889).
