Joseph Bonomi the Elder
Joseph Bonomi , called the Elder to distinguish himself from his son of the same name (born January 19, 1739 in Rome , † March 9, 1808 in London ), was an Italian architect and draftsman who worked in England from 1767 .
Live and act
After spending his youth in Italy, he moved to London in 1767. Here he worked from 1768 to 1781 for the architects Robert Adam and his brother James Adam before he went into business for himself. In 1775 he married a cousin of Angelika Kauffmann . In 1789 he became an associate member of the Royal Academy of Arts and was able to hold exhibitions of his drawings there from that point on . In 1804 he was appointed honorary architect at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. He died in London in 1808.
Bonomi worked in the neoclassical style, so he built about Dale Park, Sussex, for John Smith (1784–1788), the gallery of Towneley Hall, Lancashire, for Charles Townley (1789). Other works include Warwick Street Church in London (1790) and St. James' family chapel , which he built in 1789 for the Earl of Aylesford on the property of his villa at Packington Hall, Warwickshire .
Joseph Bonomi the Elder was the father of Ignatius Bonomi (1787–1870), also an architect, and of Joseph Bonomi the Younger , who became a well-known draftsman and Egyptologist.
