life and work

Edward Arthur Walton: Joseph Crawhall

Joseph Crawhall III. was the fourth child and second son of Joseph Crawhall II and Margaret Boyd. From 1877 to 1879 he studied at King's College in London. Crawhall stayed in Paris in 1882 with James Guthrie and Edward Arthur Walton , where they worked intensively with the French realists , especially with the works of Jules Bastien-Lepage . Crawhall was instructed there by Aimé Morot , who encouraged him to make pictures as far as possible from memory. During this time, like many of his contemporaries, he was strongly influenced by Japanese art .

After returning to Glasgow, his friendships with William York MacGregor eventually brought him into contact with the Glasgow Boys . Together they went on summer painting excursions to the Scottish coast and painted rural scenes in the style of open-air painting . In 1883 Crawhall exhibited oil paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts , but soon specialized in watercolor and pastel painting, depicting animals , primarily birds , in his works .

From 1884 to 1893 Crawhall toured Spain and Morocco , where he mainly stayed in Tangier . He made numerous paintings of these trips. From 1887 to 1893 he was a member of the Royal Watercolor Society . In 1894 he was able to hold his first one-man exhibition in Alex Reid's gallery in Glasgow. From 1898 he lived in the Yorkshire countryside and was also involved in horse breeding . In 1909 Crawhall was accepted into the New English Art Club . In 1912 he made important contributions to Abel Chapman's work Unexplored Spain . In the same year his work was recognized by a retrospective in the WB Paterson's gallery. Crawhall died in London in 1913.

His 100th birthday was celebrated in 1961 with an exhibition in the Reid Gallery. Most of his work is now in Glasgow in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and in the Burrell Collection .
