Aimé Nicolas Morot (born June 16, 1850 in Nancy , Meurthe-et-Moselle department , † August 12, 1913 in Dinard , Ille-et-Vilaine department ) was a French painter of academic realism .

Life

Morot got his first artistic lessons in his hometown (Atelier Thierry). He later went to Paris and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts for two weeks . Since he is with his teachers - u. a. Alexandre Cabanel - did not understand, he left school and continued his education largely self-taught .

Many of his sketches from the Jardin des Plantes ( botanical garden ) date from this period . It seems to be a success, as he was awarded the Prix de Rome by the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1873 . Around this time he married a daughter of the painter Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris .

In 1880 Morot made a successful debut at the exhibition of the Salon des Artistes Français . As a result, he was then to be seen regularly at these annual exhibitions until 1912. In 1898 he became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts .

reception

In his early works, Morot's works did not yet reveal a style of their own. Morot found one of these at the latest through his portrait painting . Alone and with his family, he went on several study trips to (and through) North Africa and the Middle East. On these trips, however, hardly any pictures were taken and the few do not allow him, like many of his colleagues, to be a representative of Orientalism .

“Je me suis assise enface du Morot avec une lorgnette et je l'ai étudie. C'est le tableau qui me fait le plus complétement plaisir depuis que j'existe. Rien n'accroche, tout est simple, vrai, bien; tout est fait d'apres nature et ne rappelle en rien les affreuses beautés académiques et convenues. C'est adorable à regarder; la tête de l'âne est bien, le paysage, le manteau, les ongles des pieds. C'est heureux, c'est juste, c'est bien. »
