The Bismarck quarter, today with a memorial plaque

The place was first mentioned in the 10th century as a Resionisvilla . During the Franco-Prussian War , the battle of Rezonville , a neighboring community, took place on August 16, 1870 . Rezonville was the main line of defense of the French, which is why the battle is also referred to as the Battle of Rezonville in French historiography . The famous death ride of the Bredow Brigade took place in the fields in front of Rezonville . In Freiligrath's poem "The Trumpet of Vionville" this relief attack in favor of the Prussian infantry is described heroically. The cuirassier regiment "von Seydlitz" (Magdeburgisches) No. 7 and the Uhlan regiment "Hennigs von Treffenfeld" (Altmärkisches) No. 16 formed the 12th Cavalry Brigade, Major General Bredow . The brigade's monument can still be seen today when you turn right in the village of Metz.World icon

Otto von Bismarck stayed the night of August 18-19, 1870 in Rezonville in a house next to the parish church of St-Auteur. Today a plaque commemorates this overnight stay there.

During the German occupation in World War II , the place was named Resenweiler from 1940 to 1944 .

With effect from January 1, 2019, the former parishes of Rezonville and Vionville were merged to form Commune nouvelle Rezonville-Vionville and have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative seat is in Rezonville. It belonged to the arrondissement of Metz and the canton of Les Coteaux de Moselle .
