The Uhlan regiment " Hennigs von Treffenfeld " ( Altmärkisches ) No. 16 was an association of the Prussian Army , which was stationed from 1866 to 1919 in Salzwedel and Gardelegen .

history

The Uhlan Regiment No. 16 was founded on September 27, 1866. The Royal Intendant of the IV Army Corps in Magdeburg then informed the Salzwedel magistrate that the 1st and 2nd squadrons would be housed in Salzwedel and the 3rd and 4th squadrons in Gardelegen.

In fact, the troops arrived in November. By October the Salzwedel garrison had a strength of 19 officers, 448 NCOs and men, 46 officer horses and 431 service horses. At this point in time, King Wilhelm I had already honored the Uhlan regiment with the addition of Altmärkisches on the occasion of a court hunt in Letzlingen .

After participating in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 and especially the death ride of Mars-La Tour , the regiment was given another honor on the birthday of Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1890 . It is nicknamed "Hennigs von Treffenfeld", a general from the Altmark, who distinguished himself in the battle of Fehrbellin .

With the First World War , the history of the Uhlan regiment soon ended. It was used in the campaign through Belgium to France in August 1914 , and it remained in the west throughout the war . On the frozen fronts, however, the mobile cavalry no longer played a role. From July 1916, five squadrons were distributed across various infantry divisions in northern France to perform patrol and protection services. The 6th Squadron was assigned to the 33rd Reserve Division and was still in use in Galicia .

Some units were still active as border guards in Lithuania in 1919 , but by that time the regiment had in fact ceased to exist. The returning units were demobilized in the same year and then disbanded.

In the Reichswehr , the 2nd Squadron of the 13th (Prussian) Cavalry Regiment in Hanover continued the tradition .

To the present day, however, numerous buildings and public spaces in Salzwedel testify to the presence of the Uhlans, for example the street name “An der Reitbahn” in Salzwedel and the building complex between Südbockhorn, Jahnstrasse and Freiligrathstrasse (formerly the Jenny Marx School and Music School). The Ulanendenkmal, which was erected near the town hall in 1921, disappeared after 1945.
