During the First World War , the regiment, which belonged to the Guard Cavalry Division , was assigned to the Higher Cavalry Command 1 (HKK 1) under Lieutenant General Manfred von Richthofen . This should first win as quickly as possible through the Ardennes in the direction of Dinant in front of the front of the German 3rd and 4th Armies , before the enemy blocked the mountain narrow. On August 14th, after strenuous marches on the unfamiliar, hard mountain roads, without stopping by the enemy cavalry, but often harassed by the people taking part in the battle, the area east of Dinant was reached. The enemy had occupied the western bank of the Meuse , only weaker reconnaissance units were still on this side of the river. By August 19, numerous patrols and multiple violent advances by the cavalry corps had clarified the occupation of the Maas line. The regiment passed its first serious fight on August 15, 1914 at Houx in the Meuse valley north of Dinant. In the meantime the German armies had entered. In the next few days, by order of the Supreme Army Command, HHK 1 was moved north around Namur to the left bank of the Meuse and placed under the command of the leader of the 2nd Army , Colonel General Karl von Bülow .

As early as 1920, the former members of the regiment had their comrades who died in the wars erected a memorial on the ruins of Potsdam hill . The figure of the monument, a dying warrior clad only in a steel helmet, was designed by the sculptor Wilhelm Wandschneider . It was removed and destroyed after 1945.
