Life

The farmer's son Joachim Henniges ran away from home during the Thirty Years' War at around the age of 17 and entered the Brandenburg service as a musketeer . Mentioned as a lieutenant in 1645 , he became a captain in 1648 . After the Battle of Warsaw , Elector Friedrich Wilhelm promoted him to Oberstwachtmeister in July 1656 and in 1660 to Lieutenant Colonel in the Quast regiment on horseback .

During the Dutch War , Henniges distinguished himself several times in the campaigns on the Rhine and Westphalia as the leader of the streifkorps. After the battle of Fehrbellin , the elector gave him the regiment of the fallen Colonel Berend Joachim von Mörner on the battlefield on June 28, 1675 and promoted him to colonel . The following year he ennobled him with a nobility letter dated to the day of Fehrbellin in the name of Hennigs von Treffenfeld .

During the hunt over the Curonian Lagoon , Treffenfeld emerged as partisan and leader of the vanguard in Prussia . He captured 8 flags and 700 wagons loaded with supplies and defeated the Swedish rearguard at Splitter near Tilsit on January 30, 1679 . He was then promoted to major general. After the Peace of Saint-Germain , Treffenfeld did not do any active service from 1679.

Joachim Henniges von Treffenfeld was a popular figure during his lifetime and beyond as a rider leader and war hero. He was the first to be raised to the nobility by the Great Elector.

The Altmark Uhlan Regiment No. 16 in Salzwedel was named after him.

In addition, Heinrich von Kleists set him a literary monument in the drama Prince Friedrich von Homburg or the Battle of Fehrbellin .
