Joseph E. Geusic

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joseph Edward Geusic (born November 21, 1931 in Nesquehoning , Pennsylvania ) is an American physicist who developed the Nd: YAG laser with LeGrand Van Uitert in 1964 .

Geusic studied at Lehigh University with a bachelor's degree in 1953 and at Ohio State University with a master's degree in physics in 1955 and a doctorate in 1958. From 1958, he was a physicist at Bell Laboratories . From 1962 he was a supervisor in the solid-state laser group and from 1966 to 1970 head of the solid-state optical device department. He was head of the Magnetics Department from 1970 to 1984 and head of the Solid State Laser Department from 1984 to 1994. In 1995 he retired and started Geusic Information Services .

In 1964 he and Van Uitert (as well as Richard G. Smith, HM Marcos, Bob Thomas, Leo Johnson) at Bell Labs developed the first working Nd: YAG laser. In 1966 he and Van Uitert received the patent for the neodymium-YAG laser.

In 1968 he and his colleagues at the Bell Lab succeeded in demonstrating an optical parametric oscillator in continuous wave operation for the first time. At Bell Labs, he also developed materials for non-linear optics and magnetic bubble memory and developed semiconductor lasers for optical communication.

With Van Uitert he received the RW Wood Prize in 1993 and the IEEE's Quantum Electronics Award in 1992 . He is a Fellow of the IEEE and the American Physical Society .

Geusic has been married since 1953 and has six children.
