Joseph Felsenstein (born May 9, 1942 in Philadelphia ) is an American evolutionary biologist and geneticist.

Felsenstein studied at the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a bachelor's degree in 1964 and received his doctorate in zoology under Richard Lewontin at the University of Chicago in 1968 (dissertation: Statistical inferences and the estimation of phylogenies). 1967/68 he was at the Institute for Animal Genetics in Edinburgh and in 1967 he became Assistant Professor and 1978 Professor of Genetics at the University of Washington .

He deals with theoretical population genetics, models of macroevolution and phylogenetics (e.g. statistical estimates of evolutionary pedigrees). For this he also developed computer programs (PHYLIP).

In 2008 he was one of the recipients of the Darwin Wallace Medal . In 1993 he was President of the Society for the Study of Evolution. In 1993 he received the Sewall Wright Award , in 2009 the John J. Carty Award of the National Academy of Sciences and in 2013 the International Prize for Biology of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. In 1992 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and in 1999 to the National Academy of Sciences.

From 1993 he was on the editorial board of the Journal of Molecular Evolution and from 1994 of the Journal of Computational Biology. 1978/79, 1983 to 1986 he was Associate Editor of Evolution and 1975 to 1986 and 1995 to 1998 of Theoretical Population Biology .

He is the brother of Lee Felsenstein .
