Joseph Francis Smith

Joseph Francis Smith (born January 24, 1920 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , †  May 14, 1999 there ) was an American politician . Between 1981 and 1983 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Smith attended St. Anne's Parochial School and then Northeast Catholic High School , both in his hometown of Philadelphia. Between 1940 and 1942 he graduated from Saint Joseph's College there . During the Second World War he served as a sergeant in the US Army between 1942 and 1945 . After the war he worked as an accountant. Between 1965 and 1970 he was on the staff of Congressman James A. Byrne . Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . He served in the Pennsylvania Senate from 1970 to 1981 .

Following the resignation of MP Raymond F. Lederer , Smith was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when the by-election was due for the third seat of Pennsylvania , where he took up his new mandate on July 21, 1981. Since he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party in 1982, he could only end the current legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1983 .

From 1983 to 1986, Joseph Smith served as Democratic Party leader in Philadelphia. He died on May 14, 1999.
