Joseph Fugger von Glött
Joseph Max Karl Maria Graf Fugger von Glött (born October 30, 1869 in Blumenthal , † February 5, 1903 in Maroua ) was a German officer in the Imperial Protection Force and head of the German administration in Adamaua .
Life
Count Fugger-Glött graduated from the Bavarian Cadet Corps and was employed as portepeef ensign in the Bavarian Infantry Body Regiment in 1889 , where he was promoted to Second Lieutenant in 1891. In 1895 he left the Bavarian Army and was employed by the Schutztruppe for German East Africa . In November 1898 he resigned from the Bavarian military. In March 1899 he was promoted to first lieutenant. At the end of November of that year he switched again to the protection force in German East Africa and was transferred to the protection force for Cameroon in June 1902 .
In Cameroon he was appointed resident of the newly created Adamaua residency . On the instructions of Governor Jesko von Puttkamer , he was supposed to withdraw the German troops from the area north of the Benue and only keep an observation post in Garoua . Contrary to this instruction, Fugger tried to delay the demilitarization of the extreme north as long as possible. A corresponding directive from the colonial department subsequently gave him the right. In the end, he could no longer set any accents in administration. He was murdered soon after he took office by the Pulo Bakari from Delfore. He found his final resting place in the market square of Maroua. Fugger's death triggered acts of retaliation on the part of the provisional troop command in North Cameroon. Among other things, the police chief of Maroua was sentenced to death by a court martial for alleged complicity . Walter Nuhn gives a precise description of the causes and events surrounding the death of Count Fugger-Glött in his treatise Cameroon under the Imperial Eagle. However, February 15, 1903, was given an incorrect date of death.
