Joseph Georg Beer , sometimes incorrectly quoted as Johann Georg Beer , (born July 3, 1803 in Vienna , † March 13, 1873 ibid) was an Austrian botanist. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Beer ".

Beer inherited a fashion store in Vienna from his father, but left it to a friend in 1843 and turned to botany, in which he continued his autodidactic training (supported by Eduard Fenzl and Franz Unger ). He was imperial councilor in Vienna and an amateur botanist, known for his articles on orchids and bromeliads , which he also collected in South America. His first publication appeared in 1854 (on orchids). In the 1860s he was general secretary of the kuk Gartenbau-Gesellschaft in Vienna. His studies earned him recognition in Vienna and internationally. At his death he was a member of the commission for the large horticultural exhibition in Vienna.

He was one of the first botanists to study the seeds of orchids and to record their different shapes in drawings under the microscope.

He was a member of the Leopoldina and received the Imperial Austrian Golden Scholars Medal and the Royal Prussian Large Gold Medal of Science.
