Franz Joseph Andreas Nicolaus Unger (born November 30, 1800 on Gut Amthofen near Leutschach in Styria , Austria ; † February 13, 1870 in Graz ) was a k. k. Austrian botanist , paleontologist and plant physiologist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Unger ".

Live and act

Unger first studied law at the University of Graz and then moved to the University of Vienna in 1820 , where he studied medicine . From 1822 he was enrolled at the Charles University in Prague . In 1823 he moved back to the University of Vienna, where he became a Dr. med. received his doctorate . During his studies in 1820 he was a member of the fraternity circle in Graz.

From 1827 he practiced as a doctor in Stockerau near Vienna, from 1830 as a regional court doctor in Kitzbühel in Tyrol . In 1833 he became a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . He was a corresponding member of the Prussian and Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1836 he became professor of botany at the Karl-Franzens University of Graz , and in 1850 professor of plant physiology in Vienna . In 1852 he traveled to Northern Europe , later the Orient, and from 1866 lived in retirement on his estate near Graz.

Unger initially made significant contributions to palaeontology , but later turned more to physiology and phytotomy and primarily promoted the study of cells and protoplasm .

family

Unger was born with Maria Josepha. Sand (t) married. The archivist , numismatist and dialectologist Theodor Unger (1840-1896) came from the marriage .

Honor

In Graz-Gries , Ungergasse was named after him in 1870. In 2015, Herwig Teppner lamented the decay of the inclined grave slab in the St. Peter city cemetery in Graz due to frost damage.
