Joseph Heinrich Gustav Ferdinand Böhmer

Joseph Heinrich Gustav Ferdinand Böhmer (born September 27, 1822 in Luxembourg , † September 10, 1893 in Hanover ) was royal Prussian lieutenant general and most recently the commander of the 13th Infantry Brigade.

His parents were the captain a. D. Gottlieb Böhmer († September 20, 1846) and his wife Katharina Philipp († September 20, 1834).

Life

He received his education at the grammar school in Luxembourg. After graduating, he joined the 25th Infantry Regiment as a musketeer on October 1, 1834 . There he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich on March 6, 1840 and to Seconde-Lieutenant on January 30, 1841. From July 1, 1845 to January 1, 1846 he was posted to the Saarn rifle factory . After his return he was transferred to the 1st Battalion as an adjutant on November 1, 1850, from there he was transferred to the 26th Landwehr Regiment on March 1, 1852, where he was company commander in the III. Battalion in Malmedy . Promoted to Premier-Lieutenant on November 16, 1852, he came on April 1, 1856 as a company commander in the 8th Combined Reserve Battalion. There he was promoted to captain on April 17, 1858. On September 1, 1859 he came to the 25th Combined Infantry Regiment and on July 1, 1860 to the 65th Infantry Regiment. On August 18, 1860, he was appointed company commander.

During the German War of 1866 he was wounded in the Battle of Königgrätz . On September 20, 1866 he was then awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class with swords . On October 30, 1866, he was transferred to the 13th Infantry Regiment as a major . There he was appointed commander of the 1st battalion on April 20, 1867, and on April 2, 1869 he was appointed commander of the fusilier battalion. During the Franco-Prussian War he fought at Colombey and Gravelotte . He was also in the siege of Metz and the battles at la Grange-sur-bois, St. Cyr-les-Coulons, St. Brie, Saulier, Marnay and Pontarlier. For this he received the Iron Cross 2nd Class on September 6, 170 and on January 18, 1871 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and on June 20, 1871 the Iron Cross 1st Class .

After the war he came to the 62nd Infantry Regiment on February 4, 1873, and was promoted to colonel on March 22, 1873. On June 11, 1879, he was transferred to the army officers as major general, and on August 5, 1879, he was appointed commander of the 13th Infantry Brigade. On January 23, 1881 he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves, and on September 19, 1883, the Order of the Crown, 2nd Class with a Star . On December 6, 1883, he was given the character of Lieutenant General and was put up for disposal with a pension .

He died in Hanover on September 10, 1893.

In his assessment of January 1, 1874, Lieutenant General Hohenlohe wrote : Colonel Böhmer is a very capable commander who knows what he wants. It is certainly to be expected that he will qualify as a general.

Böhmer married Wilhelmine Christiane Franziska Liel on March 6, 1861 in Cologne (* June 25, 1833; † May 13, 1908). The couple had several children:
