Joseph Henderson (born August 2, 1791 in Shippensburg , Cumberland County , Pennsylvania , †  December 25, 1863 in Lewistown , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1833 and 1837 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1802, Joseph Henderson moved with his parents to Center County , where he attended public schools. After a subsequent medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and his license as a doctor in 1813, he began to work in this profession after the end of the British-American War in Browns Mills. During the war he served as an officer in the US army, in which he until Brevet rose -Major. In the 1820s he joined the movement around the future US President Andrew Jackson and became a member of the Democratic Party founded by this in 1828 .

In the congressional election of 1832 , Henderson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 14th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Andrew Stewart on March 4, 1833 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1837 . Since President Jackson took office in 1829, there has been heated debate inside and outside of Congress about its policies. It was about the controversial enforcement of the Indian Removal Act , the conflict with the state of South Carolina , which culminated in the nullification crisis , and the banking policy of the president.

In 1836, Henderson renounced another congressional candidacy. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a doctor again. From 1850 he lived in Lewistown, where he died on December 25, 1863.
