Joseph Henninger

Joseph Henninger SVD (born May 12, 1906 in Wiesbaden ; † May 4, 1991 in Sankt Augustin ) was a Roman Catholic priest and ethnologist .

Life

After high school in 1926, he joined the Divine Word Missionaries in and studied philosophy in Saint until 1934 theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University ( Promotion for Doctor of Divinity. 1935), in Vienna anthropology, prehistory and anthropology u. a. with Wilhelm Koppers and two semesters in Assyriology in Rome . Since 1934 he was a member of the Anthropos Institute . In 1936 he became an editorial assistant for the magazine Anthropos , which he held until 1949. In 1944 he submitted his habilitation thesis ( The sacrifice among the Arabs. A study of the history of religion ). He began teaching at the University of Friborg and was appointed professor in 1954 . He also became an associate professor at the University of Bonn in 1964 . In 1974 he became a professor at the PTH Sankt Augustin.

His regional focus was on the Arab countries in North and East Africa, while his interest focused on Semitic cultures as well as sacrificial theories and the study of Islam.
