Joseph Hurley (production designer)
Joseph Hurley (born May 6, 1914 - October 5, 1982 Los Angeles , California ) was a production designer and art director .
Life
Hurley began his career in film crew in 1953 as undisclosed uncredited Concept Art - Artist at the filming of Jack Arnold's horror film Came from Outer Space . In 1956, again without credit , he worked as assistant to the art director on the monumental film Around the World in 80 Days . In the same year he worked for the first time as the responsible art director on the B-movie In the Storm of Passion . His second and last film in this capacity was Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho .
In 1961 he was nominated for the Oscar in the category of best production design together with Robert Clatworthy and George Milo , but the award went to Billy Wilder's Das Appartement that year . Between the late 1960s and the early 1980s, he worked as an illustrator again, including at Chinatown , The China Syndrome and When the Postman Rings Twice .
